What you need to know before embarking on the GTE
The Grande Traversata Elbana (GTE) is suitable for experienced hikers and regular walkers. It does not feature exposed sections but includes passages over rocky terrain and gravel, especially in higher areas. It is also suitable for dogs, provided they are kept on a leash, as required by the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago.
There are no significant dangers, but caution is advised with wildlife and rare vipers. The best times for the hike are from mid-September to May, while summer should be avoided due to the heat. In winter months, be mindful of ice, snow, and strong winds, particularly near Monte Perone.
The GTE can be traveled in either direction, but the trail does not include the summit of Monte Capanne, which is accessible via detours and proper equipment. Some areas lack cellular coverage, and the only reliable water source is Fonte Schiumoli, which may have low flow.
Wild camping is prohibited, but sleeping outdoors without tents is allowed. Lighting fires within the park is not permitted.
